Sean Payton is ‘excited to get work with rookie QB Bo Nix

Since the Denver Broncos parted with Russell Wilson, it has left plenty of questions concerning the team’s future under center.

The Broncos addressed that on the first night of the draft by taking Oregon’s Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick. Head coach Sean Payton spoke to Nix’s ability to impact the game through intermediate and deep throws.

“Let’s do another passing statistic and remove a lot of the short, underneath throws,” Payton said via ESPN. “Obviously that was part of what they do offensively, but if you remove that and come back with the analytics [he is] still first. I would say his arm strength, you saw it at the pro day, but even at the private workout it was very good. He’s super smart.

“Man, we’re excited. …We’re glad it worked out the way it did.”

Nix steps into a situation where he will compete with Zach Wilson, who was acquired earlier in the week, and Jarrett Stidham. The Broncos are moving forward with plenty of youth under center. We could see an open competition for the starting job next season.

Denver is in rebuilding mode hoping that one of their young quarterbacks can separate themselves as the long-term answer.

Nix was taken at the highest selection by the Broncos since the team took Jay Cutler with the 11th overall spot in 2006. He was the sixth quarterback taken in the first round. That tied the record for most quarterbacks selected in the opening round that last occurred in 1983.
