Steelers felt it was the ‘right thing’ to trade George Pickens

Several days have passed since the Pittsburgh Steelers made the surprising move to trade star wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

The public shock factor aside, the Steelers believe it was the right decision.

“We just kind of talked about it, lots of serious conversation, honest conversations,” General manager Omar Khan said via ESPN. “And we just felt that a fresh start for both sides was the right thing.”

It’s a move that didn’t come with Pickens demanding a trade, but rather the organization believing it was the right choice to move on from him.

Khan also added that he didn’t believe that Pickens’ three-year tenure was a disappointment, but rather just time for a “fresh start” for both sides.

In his introductory press conference, Pickens voiced that he hasn’t thought about whether he could have handled things differently in Pittsburgh.

“I can’t really say that,” Pickens said. “I’m more of like a, be where I’m at right now, where my feet at, so can’t even really think about it in the past. I’m just glad to be a Cowboy.”

The 24-year-old is looking ahead to his new beginnings with the Cowboys, where he has a chance to showcase he can be a long-term fixture in the passing game alongside All-Pro wideout CeeDee Lamb.

Pickens has a lot to play for as he’s in the final year of his rookie deal, making the 2025 season a pivotal campaign that will dictate his next contract.

He’s coming off posting 59 receptions for 900 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
