Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger admits he needs ‘to be better’

The Pittsburgh Steelers have stumbled through the first month of the 2021 season, sitting at a 1-3 record.

Much of the Steelers’ struggles have centered on star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s shortcoming in the passing game. The 39-year-old has limped through the first four games dealing with a pectoral injury and now hip issues.

Despite all that, Roethlisberger voiced this week that he believes that he simply needs to play better.

“I need to be better,” Roethlisberger said Wednesday via ESPN. “I need to fight through and figure out how to make better decisions, how to make better throws, how to be a better football player. That’s why I just said I’m not going to quit. I’m going to keep doing that.

“I’m not giving up on this season. No one in this building is. It’s still early, and there’s still a lot of fight left in us.”

Roethlisberger has struggled to find his footing this season as he’s passed for only four touchdowns, thrown four interceptions, and holds a 78.9 passer rating. He’s on pace for 16 touchdowns to 16 interceptions.

He’s noticeably struggled to make plays down the field as he’s averaging only 6.1 yards per attempt. If they hope to contend for the playoffs, the Steelers need him to become an effective factor leading the offense.
