Steelers shed light on futures of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields

The Pittsburgh Steelers head into the offseason with plenty of questions about their future at quarterback, with both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields set to hit free agency.

It leaves the franchise with the decision to bring back one of them to lead them forward in 2025. Team owner and president Art Rooney II voiced that he prefers to secure one of the two.

“They’re both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them,” Rooney said via ESPN. “So that’ll be the priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward.

“… We’ve got a whole quarterback room to fill, and so there’s jobs open in there. I wouldn’t be surprised if we look in the draft as well either this year or next, and so that’s got to be the priority.”

The Steelers signed Wilson to a one-year contract last offseason while Fields finished the final year of his rookie deal. The 2024 season featured both quarterbacks getting a shot to be the starter.

Fields started the first six games, where he led the team to a 4-2 record. However, head coach Mike Tomlin chose to go with Wilson once he returned, which saw the team win six out of his first seven starts.

Pittsburgh would stumble to finish the season, losing its last five consecutive games, including 28-14 to the Baltimore Ravens in the wildcard round.

The Steelers face a pivotal decision that could significantly impact the franchise’s future in 2025 and beyond.
