Texans, J.J. Watt mutually agree to part ways

The NFL offseason has not been kind to the Houston Texans. Star quarterback Deshaun Watson wants the team to trade him before next season, while J.J. Watt is now a free agent after agreeing with the team to mutually part ways.

The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year wanted to set the record straight before the social media feeding frenzy by posting a video on his Twitter account. He said the following about his decision to leave the team, transcribed by ESPN.

“I have sat down with the McNair family and I have asked them for my release and we have mutually agreed to part ways at this time,” Watt said in a video posted to Twitter. “I came here 10 years ago as a kid from Wisconsin who’d never really been to Texas before. And now I can’t imagine my life without Texas in it. The way that you guys have treated me, besides draft night. I mean, you guys booed me on draft night. But every day after that, you treated me like family. And I truly feel like you’re my family.”

Watt has spent his entire NFL career with the Texans and has been arguably the face of the franchise since 2011. Although he has struggled with injuries over the past few years, Watt remains a threat on the football field and will definitely help bolster another team’s defense.

In 128 games with the Texans, Watt has recorded 409 solo tackles and 101.0 sacks. He’s without a doubt a future Hall of Famer and will almost certainly draw considerable interest on the open market from teams looking to upgrade their defense.
