Texans rookie QB CJ Stroud will have to compete for starting spot
As the 2023 NFL season inches closer, the focus around the Houston Texans centers on the quarterback position.
Rookie C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills are in deep competition for the starting job. First-year head coach DeMeco Ryans says the team is still determining who will win the position outright.
“We’ll see where their process goes in training camp and see as the competition continues,” Ryans said after the first day of mandatory minicamp via ESPN. “We’ll see who separates themselves.”

Stroud has steadily pushed his way toward earning more reps with the first team on the practice field. However, Mills holds the experience and chemistry with his teammates that are helping him maintain his footing in the competition.
“They’ve been rotating each week,” Ryans said. “As you guys came to practice, you’ve seen we’ve rotated those guys each week, and this just happened to be the week that C.J. was running with the 1s.”
The Texans’ preference is likely to get Stroud as the clear-cut starter so that he can garner much-needed experience in his rookie campaign. He is the future of the franchise. As a result, the team wants to see what he can bring to the table immediately.

He has already left a strong impression on the coaching staff, which has led to his increased involvement with the starters on the practice field.
Mills will have every opportunity to retain the starting job, but Stroud may be marching his way toward earning that spot before the season opener.
