Kirk Cousins admits he’s a ‘.500 quarterback’ so far in his NFL career

Last offseason, the Minnesota Vikings made the big-splash move to acquire Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins a fully guaranteed three-year, fully guaranteed $84 million contract.

However, things didn’t go as planned as the Vikings fell short of the playoffs a year after reaching the NFC Championship game for the first time in nearly a decade. It is something that Cousins has made it clear he wants to break through the mold that has been his career up to this point of sitting around the .500 mark, according to Courtney Cronin of ESPN.

“I think the next level, really, is all about winning,” Kirk Cousins said during mandatory minicamp on Wednesday. “I’m pretty much a .500 quarterback in my career so far and I don’t think that’s where you want to be, and that’s not why you are brought in or people or excited about you.”

Cousins has shown the ability that he can lead the offense with his arm, but it has been his shortcomings against above .500 teams and in primetime games that continues to flare up. It has remained the case this past year as the Vikings had a chance to secure a playoff spot late in the season but fell short.

In spite of that, the Vikings have continued to show the utmost confidence that Kirk Cousins is the quarterback who can take them to the next level of not only being a legitimate playoff team but also a title contender. It’s simply on his shoulders to take that next step and prove that he is their long-term answer under center.

The 2019 season will be his chance to showcase just that and wash away the disappointment that was last year.
