Vikings GM makes it clear Kirk Cousins is their starting QB

Following the 2021 NFL draft, the Minnesota Vikings raised flags around Kirk Cousins’ future.

The Vikings’ decision to select quarterback Kelly Mond in the third round put question marks around Cousins. However, general manager Rick Spielman quickly silenced that chatter by voicing that the Pro Bowler is the team’s quarterback.

“I spoke to him Saturday morning and talked to his agent and just let him know that we want to make sure we have competition behind him, that there’s no doubt that Kirk’s our quarterback going forward, and that we want to create competition to see who’s going to be the backup,” Spielman recently told PFT PM. “Kirk was great. He understands. He knows he’s our guy, his agent knows he’s our guy. Right now, we’re just focusing on getting ready for this season coming up.”

Cousins’ future with the Vikings has come into due to the franchise’s struggles last season. Minnesota fell well short of the playoffs, finishing with a 7-9 record. It marked the second time in threes the team failed to reach the postseason.

Cousins managed to put together another productive campaign with 4,265 passing yards with 35 touchdowns passes. However, that didn’t equate to the Vikings finding consistent success.

The 32-year-old is entering the first year of his two-year, $66 million deal. The Vikings’ selection of Mond does provide the franchise another option if they choose to move on from Cousins after his contract.

There isn’t any immediate pressure to play him, but it gives the franchise a potential option down the line.
