Vikings’ Clear Stance on Kyler Murray as Carson Wentz Steps In

In Week 8, the Minnesota Vikings suffered their first loss of the 2026 NFL season, with Kyler Murray and company falling to the division rival Detroit Lions, 19-15.

Along with losing a game for the first time this season, the Vikings won’t have Murray available to play against the Buffalo Bills in Week 9, as he’s dealing with a hamstring injury.

According to ESPN, Minnesota has announced that they will start veteran quarterback Carson Wentz under center.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz will start Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills with Kyler Murray ruled out with a hamstring injury, coach Kevin O’Connell announced Thursday.

The primary reason for the Vikings’ success so far this season has been the defense, with defensive coordinator Brian Flores leading the way for Minnesota.

Murray hasn’t exactly been a game changer for the Vikings, and now the team can’t turn to former first-round draft pick JJ McCarthy, who Minnesota traded to the New York Giants earlier in the season.

As a result, the team will once again lean on Wentz to shoulder the load against one of the best teams in the AFC, led by Josh Allen and company.

As for Murray’s injury, head coach Kevin O’Connell made it clear that his starter won’t be placed on injured reserve, and it’s not even something they’re considering right now.

Murray is week-to-week with his injury, but putting him on injured reserve is “not under consideration at all,” O’Connell said.

It’ll be interesting to see if Wentz can help the Vikings bounce back and get a win in Week 9.
