Nick Mullens will start for 49ers until Kyle Shanahan says otherwise

Despite a rough outing on Monday Night Football against the New York Giants, former undrafted quarterback Nick Mullens will remain the starter for the San Francisco 49ers going forward.

On Tuesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Mullens will be the team’s starter until he says differently, per Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Bay Area.

This makes sense, given the 49ers’ other options right now are C.J. Beathard and Tom Savage.

Beathard is a tough guy, and he didn’t do an awful job under center for the team before getting hurt. But he has a bad penchant for turnovers (seven interceptions, 10 total turnovers in four starts).

Savage is should not be considered an option for any NFL team. In his entire career, which accounts for 2,000 passing yards, he’s thrown five touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Nick Mullens did have two interceptions on Monday night, but both of them were at least partly due to receivers not doing their job properly. He’s also shown the ability to consistently move the ball.

Through two starts, he has completed 70.5 percent of his passes for 512 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.
