NL Central Betting Preview: August 15, 2013

Francisco Liriano dominated the St. Louis Cardinals last night in a 5-1 Pittsburgh Pirates victory to give the Buccos their 71st win of the season.

“It was important because every game counts, especially after last night,” Liriano said after giving up only four hits. “It was a tough game last night and we had to put that one behind us and come ready to play.”

Liriano’s previous start had been one of the worst of his career, but Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle was impressed with how he responded against the Cards.

“That was the mulligan,” Hurdle said. “What we’ve seen all year, he’s just given us chances to win. He’s pitched deep into games, he’s mixed pitches, he’s really been in command when runners get on base.”

Even his opponents tipped their cap to Liriano’s skill on the mound.

“You couldn’t really tell what was coming out of his hand,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “You could tell he had late life by the way the guys were reacting.”
