Oakland A’s Win Series Against Boston Red Sox to Enter All-Star Break

The Oakland A’s improbably lead the AL West by two games at the All-Star Break after taking two of three from the Boston Red Sox to close out the first half of the regular season. They won a close 3-2 11 inning game against the Red Sox on Sunday with ace Bartolo Colon on the mound, and with the Texas Rangers trailing behind them by just two games, they need to continue their hot ways to take the AL West.

Though the team’s stats are fairly pedestrian, with the A’s ranked 21st in the league in batting average, eighth in runs, 11th in on-base percentage and 16th in slugging, they’ve still managed to fight their way to a stellar 56-39 record. Their success has been based largely on the pitching of Colon, who holds a 12-3 record with a 2.70 ERA, and hitter Josh Donaldson, who leads the team in virtually every major statistical batting category. However, with young up and comers like A.J. Griffin on the roster, they could  prove to have staying power in a rugged AL West division.

“I just tried to act like number 40 in situations like that,” said Griffin of his 3-0 blanking of the Red Sox two days ago. “Just not show they have me in a situation or they have the upper hand. That’s something I’ve learned a lot just watching Bartolo pitch.”
