Patriots coach Bill Belichick sees ‘an opening to get to the Giants’
Things are starting to get interesting for the New England Patriots as they await their opponent following the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs. Rumors are running rampant about a discord within the organization between Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and owner Robert Kraft.
Things have reportedly gotten so bad in New England that Belichick could be considering leaving the Patriots with the New York Giants being a potential destination for arguably the greatest NFL head coach of all time. The Giants parted ways with Ben McAdoo during the 2017 campaign and have yet to hire a successor, but Belichick is fully aware of the opportunity, according to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News.
“I’m sure Bill knows this is his last chance to be the Giants coach,†a source close to Belichick said Friday. “Bill sees an opening — an opening to get to the Giants.â€
Belichick was with the Giants organization from 1979 to 1990 with varies roles from special team coach to linebackers coach to defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells. Ultimately, after winning two Super Bowl as a defensive coordinator in New York, Belichick left the organization to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
Obviously, Belichick’s stint with the Browns didn’t go too well as he was unable to right the ship in Cleveland. Eventually, after a short stop in New England and a couple of years with the New York Jets, Belichick was named the head coach of the Patriots.
Now, after an apparent disagreement with Kraft on the future of the franchise regarding the quarterback position, Belichick’s eyes might be starting to wander around the NFL with New York a potential destination. Kraft wanted to stick with Tom Brady a little while longer resulting in the team trading Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers for virtually nothing.
There’s no telling how this will all pan out, but the end of the dominant era of the Patriots may be coming to an end if these reports turn out to be true. In the meantime, the Giants may be preparing for the return of Belichick or at least are entertaining the idea.
