Patriots trade Jimmy Garoppolo to 49ers

In a move that will rock the National Football League, the New England Patriots sent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2018 second-round pick on Monday night, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Garoppolo, who started a pair of games in 2016 while Tom Brady was serving a four-game suspension, goes from the defending Super Bowl champions who are 6-2 this season to a winless 49ers team that have not had a winning season since 2013.

The 49ers were expected to go after Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins next year to reunite him with coach Kyle Shanahan, who was Washington’s offensive coordinator for Cousins’ first two NFL seasons.

The 49ers play host to the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants over the next two Sundays before entering their bye week. Garoppolo is not expected to play Sunday, but with the subsequent release of Brian Hoyer, he’s got one less man to compete with.
