Philip Rivers Repaying Faith of Reich for Colts

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers is the kind of guy you’d want to put  your neck on the line for.

That’s according to head coach Frank Reich, whose decision to sign the veteran signal caller is paying off.

Philip Rivers (39) signed a $25 million one year deal to play with the Colts for the 2020 season. It was widely expected that he would retire on its expiry.

However, if Philip Rivers continues to play like a much younger quarterback, he could extend his Indianapolis stay.

The Colts would be relieved to find a solution at quarterback, if even for a couple more years. The franchise was thrown into turmoil after the surprise retirement of Andrew Luck before the 2019 season.

With Jacoby Brissett not considered ready to lead the team, Reich turned to the experience of Rivers.

Rivers has repaid that faith by producing age defying stats. His statline for this season is almost identical to that of the Browns’ Baker Mayfield.

“At the way he’s playing right now … if he wants, he has multiple years of good football ahead of him,” Reich said, via ESPN.

“Never been a doubt in my mind the kind of football Philip Rivers could play and would play this year and has played,” Reich added.

“Had that much confidence in him, so it wasn’t a hard decision. Yeah you’re putting your neck on the line for somebody, but OK, this is the kind of guy you want to put your neck on the line for.”

Rivers has played through a foot injury to help the Colts to a 9 – 4 record. Equal to the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis is in with a shot of making the playoffs this year. Their next game is on Sunday against the Houston Texans.
