Phoenix Suns are This Season’s Worst NBA Team

The Phoenix Suns are guaranteed to finish the NBA season with the worst team record following their defeat on Sunday.

Losing somewhat inevitably to the Golden State Warriors by 117 – 100, it was their 61st loss of the season. The Phoenix Suns now have the best chance at landing the No.1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Klay Thompson scored 22 first-quarter points to end the game early for the Golden State Warriors. A Suns team with only 9 active players on the roster were down by 20 points by the 4th quarter. For this season’s worst NBA team, there was no coming back from that.

The Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic, Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings were the other possible worst teams. Following the Warriors defeat and the Grizzlies beating Detroit, Phoenix now has the worst record by 2.5 games.

Phoenix’s current 20-61 season began with the firing of coach Earl Watson after three defeats in the first three games. The Suns have the worst offensive, defensive and net records in the NBA. The 2011-12 Charlotte Bobcats were the last team to finish the season bottom in those categories, with 7 wins.

Now they are officially the worst team, the Suns now have a 25% chance of getting the No. 1 pick. Arizona’s Deandre Ayton is widely projected to No.1 in this years’ draft, which will take place on June 21.

Ayton played high school basketball in Phoenix, and has spoken about his openness to starting his career with the Suns:

“Honestly, I could see myself in Phoenix. I could see a little Shaq and Kobe 2.0,” he said.

The NBA Draft Order will be revealed on May 15 in Chicago. Following that, the NBA combine runs from May 16 – 20.
