Power Play: NHL Weekly Recap

Continuing the weekly recap in the NHL… here are some of the key match ups, defeats, victories and headlines that you should know.

 

Red Wings Are Still Dominant

They may have lost to the Canadiens (14-4-1) 4-1 on Sunday but the Red Wings bounced back and proved they are still dominant on Tuesday night against the Blue Jackets (6-11-1), winning 5-0 in a shut out.

 

Another Shut Out

The Penguins (12-3-1) put up a big win against the Canadiens on Tuesday night, winning 4-0. Four different Pens players scored in the win against the Canadiens including Sydney Crosby, Beau Bennett, Steve Downie and Brandon Sutter. They previously won against the Rangers, 3-2 in a shootout. Marc-Andre Fleury registered his fourth shutout of the season, leading the league.

 

Good News for Olli

Olli Matta, defenseman for the Penguins, was back on the ice Tuesday night following a cancer scare. Matta, 20 years old, underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his thyroid and returned to the ice a few days after the surgery.

 

Sabres Showing Life

The Sabres didn’t have an impressive start to their season but this past week, they were able to get two big wins, bettering their record to 5-13-2. Saturday, the Sabres beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2. Tuesday night, the Sabres beat the San Jose Sharks (10-9-2) 4-1 with two of those goals scored by Gionta.

 

Is There a Mercy Rule in Hockey?

The Nashville Predators (12-4-2) stunned on Tuesday night – they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 9-2. Filip Forsberg, Calle Jarnkrok, Roman Josi, Eric Nystrom, Mike Ribeiro, Derek Roy and Colin Wilson and Taylor Beck all scored goals. The Predators went into the third period leading 8-0.

 

Close Calls

Capitals (8-7-3) and Coyotes (8-9-2) went into overtime Tuesday night but the Caps were able to pull out the win. The Ducks (11-4-5) and the Flames (12-6-2) also had to play beyond the third period and the Flames won in a shootout.
