Red Sox DH David Ortiz His 400th Home Run

On Saturday night David Ortiz made history as the Red Sox slugger hit a pair of home runs against the Houston Astros, which were the 400th and 401st in a Boston uniform. Big Papi has 459 career homers.

This puts him in elite company, among Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski, two of Beantown’s most beloved athletes. The trio are the only Red Sox players to have reached the historic milestone.

“It’s an honor to be mentioned with those legends,” Ortiz said. He added, “When you come to this organization to play, you’re not expecting to be mentioned with those guys.”

Making the moment extra special for Ortiz is that it came in front of an ecstatic home crowd. No. 400 came on a drive into center-field in the third inning and No. 401 was a dinger to right-field in the fifth inning. He added a double to deep left center in the eighth inning, just for good measure.

The Astros had a 5-1 lead in the top of the third, but the Sox battled back, eventually winning 10-7.
