Robert Saleh Still Undecided On Starting QB Against Texans

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh as of Monday had not decided who will start at quarterback against Houston.

Aaron Rodgers was supposed to revolutionize the quarterback position for the Jets this season. Instead, his Week 1 achilles tendon injury means they’ve ended up with an unsatisfactory carousel.

Zach Wilson was benched for Tim Boyle after nine starts, and Boyle was replaced by Trevor Sieman on Sunday. The Jets have lost five consecutive games, scoring only 45 points in that run. To make matters worse, there is speculation that Zach Wilson is reluctant to be the starter again.

“If he was reluctant to play, guys, he wouldn’t be here,” Robert Saleh said.

“The young man wants the ball. He wants to start,” Saleh added.

“He believes he’s the best quarterback in the room and the best quarterback for this team and the guy who gives us the best chance to win. And I’ll tell you guys the same thing I told him: I appreciate it. I appreciate the fact that he wants to play. I’m just not there yet [with a decision].”

Reportedly, Wilson is concerned about the risk of injury. However, there is probably some confidence management at play from Robert Saleh here. Wilson has been benched three times since being drafted in 2021. He is likely to be released once the season ends.

“Empathetically, I’m sure there would be (concern about Wilson’s mentality),” Saleh said.

“We had this story last year and I think it’s different. I think last year he truly lost confidence in himself. I think this year, as demonstrated by [Monday’s meeting], he knows damn well he should be on the football field.”
