Rumors of a Kyrie Irving and LeBron James reunion heating up

Two weeks ago, Kyrie Irving revealed that he had called LeBron James to apologize for the way he received his leadership.

According to one report, there might have been another reason behind Irving’s call.

On Tuesday, Bleacher Report’s Ric Bucher published a column detailing the potential destinations for Anthony Davis, who requested a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans over the weekend. Much of the piece concerned Davis. However, one passage regarding the Los Angeles Lakers included an interesting nugget regarding Irving and James’ relationship.

“The Lakers may need to get creative to force the Pelicans’ hand, but they have reason to be,” Bucher wrote. “While the news since last summer has been largely about stars not interested in being LeBron’s sidekick—George’s decision to re-sign with the Thunder, Jimmy Butler not having the Lakers on his reported preferred list and Kawhi Leonard reportedly favoring the Clippers—a source close to the Celtics confirmed that Kyrie Irving is genuinely interested in reuniting with his former Cavaliers teammate.”

“That is for real,” the source said.

The idea of Irving and James reteaming would have seemed unfathomable less than two years ago. Then, Irving requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers partly due to his desire not to play with James. The pair of All-Stars then proceeded to take not-so-subtle jabs at one another via social media. The situation ultimately culminated in Irving’s trade to the Boston Celtics.

In the time since, however, Irving and James have appeared to repair their relationship. Last week, James — now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers — tagged Irving in a post on his Instagram story, sending social media into a brief frenzy.

With enough cap space to sign a max free agent over the summer, the Lakers could conceivably sign Irving before acquiring Davis in a trade to form the league’s latest super team. In addition to Los Angeles, the Celtics and New York Knicks are expected to be suitors in the race for Davis’ services.

For what it’s worth, Irving has stated in the past that he intends on re-signing with the Celtics. But as even the mere mention of James and Irving reteaming shows, anything is possible in the NBA.
