SEC Preview: Week 2

Bo Wallace and Ole Miss will look to beat rivals Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Bo Wallace and Ole Miss will look to beat rivals Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Week 1 in the SEC finished almost according to plan. Texas A&M routing South Carolina marked the biggest shocker of the weekend within the conference, while interconference battles almost exclusively went the way of the powerhouse SEC.

Louisiana State earned a strong victory over the Big Ten’s Wisconsin, while Georgia got the better of Clemson in an ACC-SEC all-ranked showdown.

And then there was Florida and the game that never was. It’ll be interesting to see if the now-invalidated game weakens the Gators’ credibility down the stretch.

The conference’s only team to record a loss outside of league played proved to be Vanderbilt, which was thumped 37-7 by Rice. Coincidentally, it’s the Commodores who feature in this week’s featured SEC matchup, which is likely more a comment on the soft schedule in Week 2 than anything else.

Featured Matchup

No. 15 Mississippi at Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt (0-1, 0-0 SEC) doesn’t look like it’s going to have a season to remember, so don’t expect the Commodores to feature in the featured matchup often this season. On Saturday though, the team goes head-to-head with a long-time rival at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn.

No. 15 Mississippi (1-0, 0-0 SEC) began the year with a 35-13 win over Boise State, with quarterback Bo Wallace throwing for 387 yards and four touchdowns. He’ll need to improve his accuracy going forward, having thrown three interceptions in the season opener.

Ole Miss left Nashville with a 39-35 victory in this fixture a season ago, snapping a three-game losing streak against Vanderbilt. The Rebels are 3-6 in the last nine head-to-head meetings and looking to improve, whilst keeping their AP ranking and national championship hopes alive.

A 20-point favorite heading into the game, can Mississippi avoid a slip up against their bitter rivals, or will the Commodores leave Music City with something to smile about?
