Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger to have season-ending elbow surgery

The elbow injury that took Ben Roethlisberger out of Sunday’s game against Seattle will also keep him out for the remainder of the 2019 season.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin released a statement Monday morning, through the team’s website, announcing Roethlisberger will undergo surgery on his injured elbow and will be placed on the Reserve/Injured List:

Ben Roethlisberger had an MRI on his right elbow Sunday evening and it was determined by the Steelers’ medical team that surgery will be required. We expect the surgery will be scheduled for this week. He will be placed on our Reserve/Injured List and is out for the season.

The 0-2 Steelers will now be led on offense by backup Mason Rudolph, who was selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State.

Roethlisberger completed 63.2% of his passes Sunday for 112 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
