Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell claims he’s just trying to ‘make plays’ ahead of Week 2

The Pittsburgh Steelers racked up a league-worst 35 rushing yards last week against the division rival Cleveland Browns. The lack of a run game actually made it competitive in what was expected to be a lopsided affair in the Steelers’ favor.

One of the concerns expressed after the close game against the Browns was whether Bell is in shape or in Mike Tomlin’s good graces. Bell claims that he’s only trying to make plays as Week 2 draws near for Pittsburgh, via ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

“I’m just trying to run the plays that are called to the best of my ability and make plays when the opportunities present themselves,” Bell told reporters Wednesday from his locker. “I just have to get better at that and hopefully will do that this week.”

One excuse given by the Steelers for the lack of touches for Bell and a non-existent run game against Cleveland was the opposing defense. Cleveland opened up the passing game making Pittsburgh air it out rather than go to the ground with Bell.

In Week 2, the Steelers will face a tough defense in the form of the Minnesota Vikings. Last Monday, Minnesota was able to hold Adrian Peterson and the New Orleans Saints’ running game in check meaning Bell could be in for another long day.

The Vikings will almost certainly be a formidable opponent for the Steelers as they try to start the season 2-0. Whether Bell gets more carries or looks like his old self, remains to be seen.
