Steve Spurrier hired as coach for new football league
Former Florida and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is making his way back to the sidelines. In talking recently with CBS News, Spurrier announced that he’ll be the head coach of an Orlando-based franchise in a new spring league set to launch next February.
The Alliance of American Football is an eight team league set to premiere one week after next year’s Super Bowl.
In talking about his decision to join the league, Spurrier had this to say.
“It’s a fine line between who makes a team and who doesn’t in the NFL. We don’t have a minor league of professional football,” Spurrier said. “Those players get a chance to continue playing even if they don’t play at the highest level and then maybe someday they play well enough to go to the highest level.”
The league is being head by Charlie Ebersol and former NFLer Hines Ward.
Spurrier, 72, last coached with South Carolina from 2005-15. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as the Washington Redskins’ head coach and another 12 seasons with the Florida Gators.
