Tennessee Titans Fined by NFL Over Covid-19 Misconduct

The Tennessee Titans has been fined by the NFL as a result of its conduct following its Covid-19 outbreak

The outbreak in Nashville was both the first and the largest Covid-19 outbreak of the season. It led to their game against the Steelers, which was finally played Sunday being postponed for three weeks.

In total, 24 Titans players and personnel tested positive for the virus. As three other teams experienced outbreaks, the league threatened harsh sanctions and implemented stricter protocols.

Roger Goodel had threatened that noncompliance could be punished by suspensions and draft pick forfeitures. Ultimately, Tennessee was fined $350,000 – the largest ever fine for misconduct.

For a while, it looked like the Titans might escape discipline, with the commissioner saying on Oct 13 that the new measures are “not about discipline — this is about keeping our personnel safe.”

New protocols included video surveillance of team facilities to ensure compliance and identify vulnerabilities. As well as that, close contacts of players who have tested positive are now required to isolate themselves.

Titans players held a private practice session one day after being told not to hold any team activities. It was this, following an NFL and NFLPA investigation, which led to the fine.

The league declined to comment on any other findings of the investigation into the Tennessee Titans.

It is the league’s intention to continue juggling fixtures as and when a Covid-19 outbreak occurs. There are still no plans to add an 18th week to the season, or to shorten the schedule. The NFL is satisfied that rescheduling games by a few days is working.

The Las Vegas Raiders may be the next team under the microscope, after players were fined by attending an event in violation of local health guidelines.
