Two Routs Define Weekend of Big East Action
It was a heated and emotional weekend of Big East play this past weekend as No. 5-ranked Georgetown routed No. 17-ranked Syracuse 61-39, and No. 8-ranked Louisville destroyed No. 24 Notre Dame 73-57.
The final weekend of Big East basketball play was a time for reflecting on the rich history of the conference. John Thompson Jr., the long-time Georgetown coach and father of current Georgetown coach John Thompson III, weighed in on the historic rivalry between the Hoyas and the Syracuse Orange.
“It took a little time for my hate to build against Syracuse,” Thompson Jr. said. “It took a little time for my hate to build against St. John’s, and you cherish that. You pass that on. My son will come off the floor in certain games and say, ‘I don’t want to let them beat me.’ I say, ‘You got that right.'”
Georgetown was a small 1.5-point favorite heading into the game, but they absolutely demolished the Orange on the defensive end, holding the team to 39 points, the lowest total ever for a Jim Boeheim-coached team. The Hoyas appear to have Syracuse completely figured out; they’ve held the Orange to just 33 percent shooting this season, while in the rest of their games Syracuse scores at a 44 percent clip.
