UFC Fights to Look Forward to in July

This month of July is an exciting one and we will get the MMA action started early in July as just a couple days after the Fourth, UFC 162 will take place on July 6.  The card for UFC 162 is one of the most intriguing fight-cards in recent memory.  However, at the end of July(the 27th to be exact), UFC on FOX 8 will take place and offer some interesting fights between some young up and comers and a Flyweight Title bout.  Let’s get a closer look at all the MMA action for the month of July.  Here are a few of the fights to look forward to as June winds down.

Anderson Silva versus Chris Weidman – UFC 162

Any time Anderson Silva steps into the octagon it is going to be the most talked about fight, period.  He has an aura and calmness about him that attracts fans while at the same time as put up the performances, with a 33-4-0 fight record and reigning Middleweight Title holder, to cause many to call him the greatest pound-for-pound fighter the UFC has ever produced.  Silva has a UFC record 11 knockout victories.  Many are beginning to believe that Silva is truly unstoppable.

The young Chris Weidman will be putting his undefeated 9-0 record against what could potentially be Silva’s 11th consecutive title defense.  Weidman is a great wrestler and has a solid jiu-jitsu.  The question is can Weidman defy all the odds (Weidman’s opening money line is set at +215 to Silva’s -275) and stop the MMA legend that is said to be unstoppable.

Frankie Edgar versus Charles Oliveira – UFC 162

Frankie Edgar is a fighter who is no stranger to main-eventing UFC events.  Bleacher Report recently pointed out that the last time Edgar competed in a non-title match was was December 5th 2009.  In that time period Edgar became the Lightweight Champion but was only able to hold it for a short time.   Since then he has been on a very depressing losing streak.  Edgar needs to prove he can still win and compete with a win at UFC 163.

Charles Olvieira is still considered an up and comer trying to earn his stripes in the UFC despite a 16-3-0 overall MMA record he is 6-3 since joining the UFC.  A high profile win against a name like Edgar would give his UFC career a major boost into the limelight and could very well put is name in title contention.  Edgar is the huge favorite in this fight according to the opening odds with a -550 money line compared to Oliveira’s +375 money line.

Rory MacDonald versus Jake Ellenberger – UFC on Fox 8

While the UFC on FOX 8 has a Flyweight Title match on the card, we are really looking forward to this clash of Welterweights that may go a long way in deciding who gets the next shot at Georges St. Pierre.  While the fight is still a month away the trash talking between the fighter has been intense while both fighters have just stopped short of demanding a fight with St-Pierre if they win this one.
