Warriors’ LeBron James Pursuit Takes Intriguing Turn After Draymond Green Move

As the start of free agency on Tuesday inches closer, the Golden State Warriors appear to be laying the groundwork for some massive moves.

Former All-Star Draymond Green is expected to opt out of the $27.7 million final year of his four-year deal to free up financial space for the Warriors.

The chatter picked up late Sunday night as The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor reported that the Warriors are planning on pursuing a trade for Washington Wizards star big man Anthony Davis in an attempt to entice star forward LeBron James to sign in free agency.

Green is expected to give the Warriors time to make moves before inking a new contract to return to the team. It’s likely that he wouldn’t have let that type of money on the table if he didn’t know that Golden State had a legitimate shot at trading for Davis and potentially landing James.

The Warriors’ interest in acquiring James has been long reported, as the team had attempted to trade for him before last season and inquired about his availability before February’s trade deadline.

It’s also no secret that James holds a strong bond with four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry while publicly expressing over the years that he would be interested in playing alongside him. The two were significant parts of Team USA’s 2024 Gold Medal squad.

The Warriors are looking to maximize Curry’s remaining tenure in Golden State while also potentially enticing him to sign another contract next offseason as he’s playing under his one-year, $62.5 million extension that he originally inked in August 2024.
