Xavien Howard In Line to Be Most Valuable Cornerback

Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard is on the verge of signing an history-making new deal with the franchise.

According to ESPN, the Miami Dolphins will make Xavien Howard (25) the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback. The $76.5 million deal is for five years and has $46 million guaranteed.

Xavien Howard will make $51 million over the first three years of his new deal, per an ESPN source.

From Miami’s perspective – it has secured the future of it’s defense in tying down Howard, who is the cornerstone. It’s also a timely reward for the cornerback, who is coming off his first Pro Bowl season.

Last season, he lead the league in co-interceptions, with 7 in 12 games. In his past 17 games, he has 11 interceptions, underlining his status as one of the NFL’s best.

Howard is clearly motivated to reach not just these heights, but further ones. At the end of the 2018 season, he said he wanted to be the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback. He has now achieved that.

At the Pro Bowl, he said he wanted to become the Dolphins’ franchise player. He is now a step closer to achieving that.

Tying him down was a sound move from the Dolphins, who have been negotiating with Howard for months. In rewarding him they have shown young players that they will be valued in a rebuilding team.

As well as that, it allows them to be more flexible in the draft and free agency in 2020. Currently, Miami has 10 draft picks and close to $100 million in cape space for the start of 2020.

With Howard’s future secured, the Dolphins can now begin work on re-signing left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
