Vince Young Starting to Impress in CFL
Vince Young hardly looked like a former All-Pro, Davey O’ Brien Award winner on Wednesday. He was worst of the five Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterbacks that day. Thursday was a different story. Young looked like a former NFL quarterback.
“You may have to ask Vince,†coach Chris Jones told 620 CKRM when asked how Young turned it around. “He just seemed more comfortable today. Maybe he just woke up on the right side of the bed. He was very comfortable in the huddle – it may have been the play calling. We’ll have to go talk about it as a group, but his talents certainly looked a little bit different today than yesterday.”
No matter how well Vince Young performs, the job he’s after is the back-up role to Kevin Glenn. But the competition is tough, as CFL veteran Brandon Bridge has also looked goo.
““I thought Brandon’s had a solid camp,†Jones said. “There was only one day where I felt he didn’t play his best football.”
One of those in the mix for the job is former Missouri quarterback Maty Mauck. Mauck was released by Missouri when new coach Barry Odom took over.
“Maty’s failure to live up to expectations in recent weeks was the reason for this decision,†Odom said at that time. Of course Odom was referring to Mauck’s third suspension in four months. But this one was the worse. A video of him snorting white powder off a coffee table was making the rounds on social media.
Mauck compliled an impressive 17-5 record with the Tigers and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2013. But his senior season was spent at Eastern Kentucky, where he was injured after only playing in two games. There’s no doubt that he has some talent, but it’s hard to tell if he’s what the coaches are looking for.
