The Cowboys’ shortcomings have primarily been impacted by their quarterback situation that has seen Pro Bowler Dak Prescott lost for the season due to injury. The franchise has moved forward in another direction with yet another option under center as Garrett Gilbert will start in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.
The Dallas Cowboys plan to start Garrett Gilbert at quarterback Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a source confirmed to ESPN.
The decision to go with Gilbert comes after rookie Ben DiNucci struggled in his first career start against the Philadelphia Eagles. DiNicci passed for 180 yards on 21-of-40 completed passes with four sacks and two fumbles.
The Cowboys are still without Andy Dalton, who is currently on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Meanwhile, the team did bring aboard Cooper Rush but elected to go with Gilbert this week. Since entering the league in 2014, he has just six career pass attempts, which matches the fewest by a non-rookie quarterback making his first start in team history.
In his first career, Gilbert has a difficult challenge going up against the Steelers defense, one of the league’s top units. Pittsburgh has rolled through the season, holding a 7-0 record behind their stout play defensively, ranking fifth overall. The former SMU product will have his hands full as he attempts to help the Cowboys snap their three-game losing streak.
