John Wall officially announces retirement from the NBA
After 11 seasons in the NBA, former No. 1 overall pick out of the University of Kentucky, John Wall, is calling it a career.
Wall took to his Instagram account to announce the news that he is walking away from the game of basketball.
“Today, I’m stepping off of the court, but not away from the game,” Wall said Tuesday in a social media post. “Basketball will always be in my life, and new opportunities present themselves. I feel now is the time to walk confidently into my next chapter.”
Despite being an incredibly talented player on both ends of the basketball floor, Wall never reached his true potential, as he struggled with injuries throughout his 11-year career. From 2018 to 2023, Wall never played more than 41 games and ended up missing two seasons entirely during that span.

Wall’s best years in the league were the nine years he spent with the Wizards while playing alongside fellow star Bradley Beal. He was named an All-Star five times and built a reputation for being one of the better two-way guards in the NBA.
The Kentucky product will go down as one of the best players in Wizards history, along with Beal. However, he didn’t end his playing days with the franchise, as he played for the Houston Rockets and LA Clippers in the twilight of his NBA career.
Wall played 647 regular-season games over the course of his career and averaged 18.7 points, 8.9 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.
