Sam Darnold: I Haven’t Played Well Enough
New York Jets offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains has thrown his support behind beleaguered quarterback Sam Darnold.
“This kid is the most mentally tough kid I’ve ever been around,” Loggains said. “There’s going to be a really bright future for Sam Darnold.”
Sam Darnold will need every ounce of that mental toughness to overcome a shambolic season for him and the Jets.
On the season, Darnold has only choreographed six touchdown drives. His career-low 64.0 passer rating is the lowest in the NFL. As well as that, he’s gone four games in a row without a touchdown pass. It’s the longest such drought for a Jets signal caller since Geno Smith in 2013.

“First of all, I take full responsibility for the way I’ve played,” Darnold said.Â
“I haven’t played well enough. Like I continue to say every single week, we have great people in this organization. With that being said, everyone is going to take blame for certain parts of us losing.
“But for me, personally, I’ve got to play better and put the team in the right position to have a chance to win games and make it close at the end.”
Drafted No.3 in 2018, Darnold’s future is now in question. New York is in line for the first or second pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The two presumptive top picks are Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence. If either of those are drafted, it would likely spell the end of Darnold’s time as a Jet.

Coach Adam Gase admits he hasn’t done right by Darnold in terms of helping him grow.
“I came here to help him, help him develop his career, and we haven’t been able to do that,” said Gase.
