Browns’ Myles Garrett remains intent on leaving Cleveland

Star defensive end Myles Garrett continues to seek a trade from the Cleveland Browns, but he reportedly has no interest in inking a contract extension with the franchise.

Garrett and his agents have closed the door on any talk toward extending his current five-year, $125 million deal in its fourth year. The 29-year-old hasn’t wavered from his desire to play elsewhere, as he’s made his intentions crystal clear.

“Speaking with the management at the Browns, I don’t feel like our future is aligned with winning right now,” Garrett told ESPN’s “NFL Countdown” hours before Super Bowl LIX via ESPN. “And that’s what I’m looking forward to do at this stage of my career.”

The Browns are coming off a disappointing season where they fell well short of playoff contention, finishing with a 3-14 record. Much of that came due to lackluster play under center, largely from Deshaun Watson before he suffered a season-ending re-torn Achilles tendon.

In fact, Watson’s struggles to play with any consistency likely have factored into Garrett’s decision to want to play elsewhere. The Browns are also tied into his massive, fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million deal.

He is in his fourth year, and the final two seasons each have a $72.9 million cap hit. In other words, Cleveland is financially tied to him for the remainder of his deal, with no out-of-contract options.

Garrett is in the prime of his career, and he’s trying to maximize that time by giving himself the best chance to compete for a Super Bowl, and that is clearly not with the Browns.
