Jets sign QB Justin Fields to two-year deal

The New York Jets are moving into a new era after agreeing to a two-year, $40 million deal with quarterback Justin Fields.

Fields step into an opportunity to latch onto the starting job with veteran Tyrod Taylor as the backup for the 2025 season.

The former first overall pick will take the reins after two frustrating seasons with Aaron Rodgers at the helm. Fields is coming off showing flashes of promise in his lone campaign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He guided the Steelers to a 4-2 record through the first six games as Russell Wilson sat out due to a calf strain. Fields finished the year as the backup, which raised questions concerning his future in Pittsburgh.

The Ohio State product has yet to flourish in proving he can be a legitimate starting quarterback. Although his new deal with the Jets should likely mean he will be the starter, it’s a short-term contract that leaves the door open for New York to move on without a significant financial commitment holding them down.

The change of scenery could be what Fields needs to become a franchise cornerstone. He has shown that he can be a huge factor as a runner but has yet to showcase his game-changing ability as a passer.

In 38 starts with Chicago, he notched 6,674 passing yards on a 60.3 completion rate with 40 touchdowns to 30 interceptions. Fields will have the familiar face of wide receiver Garrett Wilson, as the two played together at Ohio State.
