NCAA 2014 Season: Early Odds To Win The Heisman Trophy

Florida State freshman sensation Jameis Winston became the youngest winner in Heisman Trophy history less than two months ago, but it’s already old news with Las Vegas oddsmakers. Something that happened yesterday in Las Vegas is like something that happened five years ago almost everywhere else in the world.

The early line on the 2014 Heisman winner is already out and while Winston winning the trophy last year is old news, Winston winning the trophy again this year is a story that already has legs. Here are the odds-on favorites for the top individual honor in college football—11 months before ballots are due and eight months before the season even begins.

Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State

Odds: 2/1

Florida State’s Jameis Winston won the Heisman and went undefeated en route to a BCS Championship in his first year with the Seminoles. With a 33.3 percent chance of taking the trophy again, it’s safe to say people are expecting more than flash in the pan.

Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon

Odds: 7/2

Oregon’s Marcus Mariota was the favorite to win through much of last season, right up until the Ducks laid an egg against Pac-12 rival Stanford. With a 22.2 percent chance of rebounding and winning this season, Mariota is expected to bounce back and compete again.

Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State

Odds: 4/1

Ohio State’s Braxton Miller was one of the preseason Heisman frontrunners, unfortunately an injury early on kept him out of three of the Buckeyes first four games. Miller has a 20 percent chance of winning, but he’ll have to perform much better down the stretch against good competition than he did last season.

T.J. Yeldon, RB, Alabama

Odds: 5/1

Another year goes by, another stunningly powerful and elusive Alabama running back steps up to fill the sizable void left by the man that preceded him. This year it’s T.J. Yeldon and if the quarterbacks above him stumble early, his 16 percent chance will shoot up considerably.

Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor 

Odds: 6/1

Baylor’s Bryce Petty had to wait till his junior year to start for the Bears, but he sure made the most of the opportunity he was given. If Petty is able to build on the success and make even marginal improvements to his game, he’ll certainly be awaiting the announcement from a front row seat in New York City.
