49ers Happy With Brock Purdy And Trey Lance Contracts

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York says one of Trey Lance or Brock Purdy will get a ‘massive contract extension’.

Trey Lance ($9.3M) and Brock Purdy ($890K) account for just over $10 million against the Niners’ salary cap. This is less than what one quarterback would cost on a lot of teams, so the situation gives San Francisco some flexibility.

However, it remains to be seen if it gives them coherent quarterback play on the field. Trey Lance, if everything went to plan, should be preparing to step into Jimmy Garoppolo’s shoes right now.

However NFL careers don’t go to plan and the 2021 third has competition from Brock Purdy, the final 2022 pick.

Lance was injured most of 2022 and Purdy won his first seven starts, including two playoff games in his stead. In fact, his rehab from offseason elbow surgery is the only reason he’s not guaranteed to start over Lance.

“I wouldn’t change anything that we’ve made about the decision with Trey,” Jed York said.

“I think Trey has a chance to be great. But it’s a bonus when you get somebody at the end of the seventh round that ends up coming in and being very impactful for your team.

“You can’t worry about, well, Trey hasn’t played as many games as we would’ve liked,” York said. “It’s not his fault. He got injured.

“When you look at when we drafted him, we wanted to make sure we had a young quarterback on a rookie contract that allows you to be able to say, ‘All right, Javon (Hargrave) is kind of a bonus.'”

“There’s a delta in what you’re spending on your quarterback versus what somebody else is spending in their quarterback,” York said. “And I hope one of these three guys gets a massive, massive extension with the San Francisco 49ers at some point.

“But until then, we’re going to make sure we build this thing around a young quarterback with a very team-friendly contract.”
