Justin Herbert In Prime Position To Earn New Contract

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert isn’t concerned about playing a fourth season on his rookie contract.

Justin Herbert was drafted with the 6th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. In three seasons since then, he’s amassed 14,089 passing yards, 94 touchdowns and 35 interceptions on 66.9% completion.

Justin Herbert enjoyed his first ten-win season in 2022, leading the Chargers to the playoffs for the first time. L.A activated his fifth-year option this April, meaning he will earn $29.5 million in 2024.

However, he is only due to make $4.23 million in the 2023 season. With the likes of Hurts and Jackson signing $250 million plus contracts this offseason, an improved deal for Herbert would seem imperative for the Chargers.

“They’ve done such a great job of taking care of us and my message really hasn’t changed,” Herbert said.

“It’s been an honor to be a part of this team. It’s great to come to events like this and whatever happens, happens and it’s out of my control at this point.”

Herbert is still recovering from a shoulder operation underwent this offseason. That, rather than a new deal, is his focus heading into 2023.

“That’s a good question. I think that’s something you have to address and you have to think about,” Herbert said. “My job at this point is just to play quarterback and to be the best leader, quarterback and teammate that I can be. So I’m doing everything I can to rehab, get back and make sure my shoulder is ready for this season.”
