Mistress of Former NFL Player Buster Barnett Murders Wife, Commits Suicide

According to 11 Alive Atlanta, the local NBC affiliate, the mistress of former NFL tight end Buster Barnett, who played four seasons with the Buffalo Bills from 1981-84, kidnapped his wife from her home on Wednesday afternoon. One day later, both Lisa Brown and 49-year-old Sandra Barnett, a special needs teacher, were both dead in Brown’s car in the middle of Interstate 20.

Police say Mrs. Barnett was on the phone with a friend when Brown arrived at her house driving a black Dodge Durango, an SUV that is reportedly owned by Mr. Barnett. A few neighbors were apparently suspicious of the vehicle because Mrs. Barnett had told them recently a lock on her gate had to be replaced after being tampered with.

Although it’s not noted who initially contacted the authorities, presumably it was either Mrs. Barnett’s friend or one of the neighbors. Regardless of who called police, nearly 24 hours passed before Brown was spotted on the interstate. That led to a high-speed chase, which eventually crossed state lines into Alabama, where Alabama State Patrol troopers joined Georgia police in their pursuit.

“The chase continued to mile marker 208 where the vehicle stopped suddenly while being pursued. According to Clayton County authorities, [Lisa Brown] reached into the back of the car, retrieved a gun and shot [Sandra] Barnett before turning the gun on herself.” 11 Alive also reports that the Alabama Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.
