Angels Off To Bad Start in 2014

jered-weaver-angelsFor a brief moment it looked as if the Los Angeles Angels might be finally becoming the team they paid for in 2014. Mike Trout started things off on Monday with a two run shot off of Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez for a 2-0 lead and hen Albert Pujols drove a run in with a double to make it 3-1. Angels ace Jared Weaver was looking sharp as well, until…

It all fell apart for the Angles when in the sixth Kyle Seager doubled home a run. The M’s made a bid to tie the game but Logan Morrison was thrown out at home to end the inning. With the score now 3-2 Seattle took the lead in the seventh on a Mike Zunino triple that plated Duston Ackley with they tying run. He scored the go ahead run when Abraham Almonte singled him home.

Then to add insult to injury, Seattle scored six more in the ninth to blow it open. Justin Smoak hit a three run homer and Ackley added a bases loaded triple for a 10-3 final. Then on Tuesday, the Mariners improved to a 2-0 record with an 8-3 win. Seattle scored four in the third inning, three on another bases loaded triple by Smoak. former Mariner Raul Ibanez made it 4-2 with a two run homer to score Josh Hamilton. But that would be as close as the Angels would come as they fell to 0-2.

There are 160 games to go in the season, so if there is ever a sport in which an 0-2 start means almost nothing ti is baseball. But considering the awful starts the Angels have gotten off to the last two seasons which hampered them all year both times, there has to be a little bit of “here we go again” in Angels Nation. Hector Santiago will take the mound tonight to try and get the Halos in the win column. He was 4-9 a year ago with the Chicago White Sox. The Mariners will counter with James Paxton who went 3-0 in his four starts last season.

Sports Betting has odds on tonight’s game. Seattle is +1.5 -165 ATS and the Angels are -1.5 +145. Moneyline is Seattle +126 and the Angels are -136. If there is a team with all the incentive in the world to win tonight it is the Angels. But the pitching matchup seems to favor seems to favor Seattle. We are taking the Mariners +126 to win. Seattle seems to have a very good lineup now with the addition of Robinson Cano and rookie catcher Mike Zunino added to Smoak, Ackley and Almonte. They could be a contender if they get some pitching.
