Brian Shaw Expected To Join Luke Walton’s Coaching Staff In L.A.
After parting ways with Byron Scott following his second season with the team, the Los Angeles Lakers didn’t take long to find his successor in former player and current Golden State Warriors assistant coach, Luke Walton.
With Walton agreeing to a five-year deal earlier this month, the question now turns to his coaching staff. Walton is a first-time head coach and will have to build his coaching staff from scratch, but even though that is a daunting task, Los Angeles appears to have found Walton’s second in command, according to ESPN:
Brian Shaw will join the Los Angeles Lakers coaching staff as Luke Walton’s associate head coach, sources told ESPN.
Walton will continue as Steve Kerr’s lead assistant with the Warriors until their playoff run comes to an end. With Golden State being the favorite to win it all, the Lakers could be a few more weeks before their new head coach can assist in filling out the rest of the staff.
It remains unclear who the Lakers may target to join Walton and Shaw moving forward. Derek Fisher is another option the team could explore if he’s ready to get back to work and is willing to take a step down as an assistant after a failed stint with the New York Knicks.
Along with filling out the rest of the coaching staff, the Lakers brass will be focusing on the upcoming NBA Draft. Los Angeles was able to secure the second overall pick in the draft lottery and will now evaluate talent with Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram expected to be the top two targets come draft day on June 23.
