Mavs owner Mark Cuban says Kristaps Porzingis wants to sign a long-term deal with Dallas

The Dallas Mavericks surprised everyone recently when they pulled off a trade to acquire star forward Kristaps Porzingis from the New York Knicks. Outside of Dennis Smith Jr., the Mavs didn’t give up much for the promising young star. As a result, the discussion has turned to a long-term deal and whether Dallas can get it done.

On Monday, during Porzingis’ introductory press conference, Cuban tried to set Mavs fan’s minds at ease. The flamboyant owner made sure that it be known the rising star intends to stay in Dallas long-term, via ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

The inquiry was about whether Porzingis, the 7-foot-3 centerpiece of the trade, plans to sign a long-term deal with the Mavericks when he enters restricted free agency this summer.

“I can answer that for you,” Cuban said. “Yeah, he does.”

Cuban openly volunteered to suggest Porzingis isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Afterwards, the player in question actually got to respond to his new boss’ comments, via MacMahon.

Porzingis, 23, responded with a laugh. Asked for confirmation he said, “We’re on the same page. Don’t even ask.”

With rookie Luka Doncic already a legitimate star in the NBA, the Mavs have brought in what could potentially be his star counterpart for the foreseeable future with Dirk Nowitzki nearing the end of his storied career.

Although Porzingis is still working his way back from a torn ACL which he suffered last season, Dallas has the pieces to start building a contender in a very competitive Western Conference with these two international phenoms.
