One possible target has been training in the team’s backyard throughout the pandemic: top prospect LaMelo Ball — whose mentor and manager, Jermaine Jackson Sr., is a former Piston and Motown native.

The Pistons have struggled to find any stable backcourt talent through the first draft over the last few years. The team currently has former All-Star guard Derrick Rose in the fold, but there remain trade rumors around him this offseason.

Detroit could build their core group around Ball, who has received much praise for his potential. The 19-year-old has decent size for a point guard at 6-foot-8 and 181 pounds. He has shown to excel in pick-and-roll situations and become a reliable shooter from beyond the arc.

The Pistons could center their future around Ball and All-Star forward Blake Griffin. The franchise has struggled to gather any significant headway in the Eastern Conference. The possibility of acquiring a pick to snag the promising prospect may require to be inside the top-3 selections.

There are still a few weeks until the draft, which could see a few other teams jocking around to move up. There are already reports that both the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors, who hold the top picks respective, may be interested in trading down.
