Suns Receive Brutal Mark Williams News Ahead of New Season
Phoenix Suns big man Mark Williams underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder that will keep him sidelined for several months.
Williams suffered the injury during a workout and will now miss a significant chunk of time at the start of the 2026-27 season.
The Suns brought back the Duke product in free agency on a three-year, $36 million deal that will keep him as a key part of the team’s frontcourt.
Williams is coming off one of his best seasons that saw him play in a career-best 60 games while averaging 11.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in 23.6 minutes per game.
The 24-year-old helped the Suns reach the playoffs, but didn’t factor into the equation much in postseason play due to a foot injury. He sat out of the rotation in the first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Suns knew the inherent risk of trading for Williams last season after the Los Angeles Lakers rescinded a trade for him due to concerns about his medical history.

Since entering the NBA, he has struggled to stay on the court, which has prevented him from playing in more than 60 games in any of his first four seasons.
His absence puts more pressure on Oso Ighodaro and Khaman Maluach to fill the void in the frontcourt.
Ighodaro played notable minutes against the Thunder in the playoffs, averaging 7.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 32.3 minutes per game.
