College Hoops Odds for Weekend

There is no FBS college football this weekend, so the college sports scene turns its attention to basketball for the first time since September. Here is a preview of some of the Friday’s top games and the betting odds.

Oddsmaker has odds on these games:

Harvard Crimson at Connecticut Huskies- Harvard is +9 -110 and UConn is -9 -110. Harvard is 4-3 on the season while UConn is 6-2. We are going to pick UConn -9 in this one.

Iowa State Cyclones at Iowa Hawkeyes- Iowa State is +2 -110. Iowa is -2 -110. Iowa State is 6-2 while Iowa is 7-2. Both the Cyclones losses were to ranked teams, Cincinnati and UNLV. Wichita State and Virginia Tech have beaten Iowa. This is a pick’em game. We’ll go with the home court. Iowa -2.

VCU Rams at Old Dominion Monarchs- VCU is -15 -110. ODU is +15 -110. ODU has lost six in a row, but only their most recent loss against the Richmond Spiders was by more than 15. But we’ll take the Rams -15 in this one.

Now let’s look at some of the odds to win the NCAA Tournament:

The Florida Gators are ranked #5 and have been hammering the competition. Yet you can still get the Gators at +1500. That’s a good risk. The Butler Bulldogs are +7500. We’ve seen how they can navigate through the tournament once they get there. And it appears they are going to get there this year.  The Colorado Buffaloes are +7500. Right now they are ranked #3 in the RPI rankings. That sounds like a team worth taking a risk on at those odds.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are thought of by may of the experts is a Final Four contender. You can get the Bulldogs at +3000. The Ohio State Buckeyes are +1500. This is a very talented team that can take it all the way.

Now let’s look at teams to stay away from. The UCLA Bruins at +3000. That’s too low for a team who has lost to Cal Poly and is 5-3. The Kentucky Wildcats have lost three times already but are still only +1000. That’s entirely too low. Look at Florida and look at Kentucky and tel us why you’d bet Kentucky over Florida. That’s nuts.

The Arizona Wildcats are +600. Arizona has a good team, but that is way too low. Maybe if they beat the Gators on the 15th we’ll know a little more about them, but if they do win that game, their odds will drop even more. Arizona hasn’t played anybody that stands out. We don’t see why their odds are so low.
