49ers sending mixed signals about Brandon Aiyuk’s future

After failing to get back on the field during the 2025 NFL season, the writing has been on the wall in the Bay Area regarding the immediate future of veteran wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

The consensus has been that the 49ers will part ways with Aiyuk at some point during the offseason, but that has yet to happen, even though longtime general manager John Lynch has made it clear the wide receiver has played his last game for the storied franchise.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan gave some insight into the Aiyuk situation this week, basically saying they’ll eventually trade the wideout, via ESPN.

“I don’t have a date for it, but I know eventually it’ll resolve itself,” Shanahan said. “Hopefully, we could get something for [him]. And I know we’re in no rush to do that. You’ve got to do what’s right for the Niners, and you’re not trying to hook up any other team as fast as you possibly can. Hopefully, we can get something for that, and it’ll take care of itself.”

Ironically enough, shortly after Shanahan more or less said the team is trying to trade Aiyuk, team owner Jed York left the door open for the veteran receiver to return to the 49ers.

“I think anything’s possible, right?” York said. “We want to make sure that we have as talented of a roster as possible. First and foremost, he needs to get healthy and be able to perform. I think once that happens, he’s a really, really good football player.”

It definitely seems like the front office and ownership are not on the same page regarding Aiyuk, which could create a difficult dynamic moving forward.
