5 free agency fits for Eric Berry
Safety Eric Berry has a few options available to him this offseason. Here we take a look at five of the best fits.
5. Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks are in need of a remake after losing so many stars over the years. At 30 years old, Eric Berry isn’t going to be a superstar. He’s coming off significant injuries including an Achilles tear and a heel malady that robbed him of the last two seasons, save four games. If nothing else, Berry can provide leadership and if healthy, can do one heck of a Kam Chancellor impersonation.
4. Miami Dolphins
This doesn’t fit on the surface. Berry doesn’t have any known ties to the South Florida area, and the Dolphins are in the midst of a complete rebuild. However, this is why should no contenders come calling, general manager Chris Grier should. Miami has loads of cap space to play with in the short term and could. desperately use a guiding light as the youngsters find their way. Berry could be that, giving Miami a pair of veteran eyes to see things through.
3. Cleveland Browns
The fit is apparent. The Browns employ John Dorsey as general manager. This is the same man who signed Berry to a six-year, $78 million extension during his time in Kansas City. Dorsey values Berry and understands how he can impact both the field and the locker room as well as anybody in the game. We’ve already seen Dorsey go back to the Kansas City well over this past year when he signed troubled running back Kareem Hunt to a one-year deal. Why not sign Berry to a short deal as well, hoping to get a great player while knowing the person is top-notch?
2. Indianapolis Colts
This is similar to Cleveland. The Colts are one of the emerging contenders in the AFC, and the team’s general manager knows Berry very well. Chris Ballard was in Kansas City with Berry, and that gives him some nice insight to the kind of value Berry can add. Indianapolis is a young team with a very inexperienced secondary. The Colts have Malik Hooker but a litany of questions around him at safety. Berry could answer them.
1. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons make a ton of sense. Berry grew up in Atlanta and played college ball nearby at the University of Tennessee. Former defensive coordinator Bob Sutton is also down in Atlanta, giving him a familiar face to worth with. Finally, the Falcons are a contender provided they return to health, giving Berry the perfect storm of interest.
