Aaron Rodgers still has Packers, fans waiting on decision

The Green Bay Packers and their fans will need to wait another few days as Aaron Rodgers hasn’t decided on his football future.

What is Aaron Rodgers going to do about this upcoming season? Hell if he knows.

A day after putting out an Instagram post about gratitude — making some think he was leaning towards retirement — the quarterback did his regular spot on The Pat McAfee Show and talked about where he’s at regarding a decision on whether to play in 2022, and if he does, where. Per NFL.com:

“Let me just put this disclaimer out there right away for the few people watching that are tuning in just for a specific, maybe news, and decision. There will be no news today, no decision on my future. As I was texting with you yesterday, I just got out of a 12-day Panchakarma. … So I’m just getting my head above the sand right now and seeing what’s going on out there. But no decision about my future today.”

Rodgers, 39, is coming off some of those most brilliant football we’ve seen yet from him. The future first-ballot Hall of Famer has won consecutive MVP awards, giving him four total. Only Peyton Manning has more with five in the trophy case. However, the Packers have come up short both of those years, with losses at Lambeau Field before stunned crowds. This season was especially painful, losing in the NFC Divisional round to the underdog San Francisco 49ers.

Despite those defeats, Rodgers has little to prove. He has a Super Bowl ring after beating the Pittsburgh Steelers to cap the 2010 campaign. He’s a 10-time Pro Bowler and four-time First-Team All-Pro, all while making the 2010s Hall of Fame Team. Should the California native decide to walk away, his mantle is full.

Yet nobody will know for another few days (weeks?) as Rodgers continues to sort through his options. As of now, he’s under contract with Green Bay for only this season at $46.4 million against the cap. Should the Packers trade him, they would eat $26.8 million while clearing a valuable $19.8 million off the books.

All that said, should Rodgers come back the Packers are the clear favorites in the NFC, even over the defending-champion Los Angeles Rams. Without him, they’d be a rebuilding franchise with third-year quarterback Jordan Love taking over.

What’s to become of Rodgers and the Packers? Time will tell. Eventually.
