Bears Star Caleb Williams Explains Hidden Meaning Behind Madden 27 Cover Pose

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams earned the honor of gracing the Madden NFL 27 cover, doing so by paying homage to a Chicago legend, Michael Jordan.

EA Sports wanted one of the two covers for the game to showcase Williams’ jump passing in reference to his memorable fourth-down throw in the Bears’ comeback win over the Green Bay Packers in last year’s Wild Card round.

However, the Bears star wanted to take it a step further by specially honoring Jordan, adding the Chicago skyline and posing similarly to Jordan’s iconic slam dunk contest pose, which is now the Jordan Brand logo.

“That’s the position I want to be in, but I also wanted to pay respect to MJ,” Williams said Thursday evening at the EA Sports season-opening event at Chicago’s Navy Pier via ESPN. “It was more of a respect thing. Bringing retro back, not letting people forget that, and doing it on my side of the world of football. Paying respect to that and him and what he was able to do in Chicago. Just honestly wanted to bring that energy, that vibe back.”

Beyond that, Williams made history as the first Bears player to appear on the Madden NFL cover, which he believes is another step toward achieving his bigger aspirations.

“It’s another thing to tell me to keep going and keep striving for these goals that a lot of people say I won’t be able to do,” Williams said. “A lot of people frown upon me or this and that. All that doesn’t matter; only matters is the guys in the locker room, coaches and then my family, my support system supporting me.”

Williams and the Bears are coming off a promising season that saw them reach the Divisional Round of the playoffs. The future is bright in Chicago, and the 24-year-old is leading the charge.
