Bill Belichick not ready to name Patriots starting QB

After the departure of Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New England Patriots hadn’t acquired a replacement. They were thought to be simply handing the job off to promising young quarterback, Jarrett Stidham. The job was seemingly his to lose until the team signed former NFL MVP Cam Newton.

Cam Newton is now in the fold and already receiving some high praise in New England. The consensus now is the longtime Carolina Panthers starter will be the starting quarterback for the storied franchise moving forward. However, head coach Bill Belichick hasn’t officially dubbed him the starter leading to speculation that a decision hasn’t been made as of yet, and Belichick talked about his thought process with Week 1 around the corner, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

“When we’re ready to do it, we’ll do it,” Belichick said.

Although it is expected that Newton will get the nod as the starter before their Week 1 clash with the division rival Miami Dolphins on Sept. 13, Belichick can be unpredictable, especially now without Brady to rely on moving forward.

Currently, the Patriots have three quarterbacks in the running for the starting job in Newton, Stidham, and Brian Hoyer. However, it’ll come down to either Newton or Stidham for a crucial divisional game right out of the gate for the six-time Super Bowl champions.

The Dolphins will be looking to make a statement to start their season. A win over the Patriots would be some statement, making the Week 1 matchup one of the most intriguing to start the 2020 campaign.
